Este material se obtiene mediante la polimerizaci\u00f3n del \u00e1cido l\u00e1ctico que tiene su origen en la fermentaci\u00f3n de az\u00facares procedentes de productos vegetales con alto contenido en almid\u00f3n. El PLA no es un material nuevo. El origen de este pol\u00edmero se encuentra en 1932 cuando Wallace Carothers consigui\u00f3 un producto con un bajo peso molecular calentando el \u00e1cido l\u00e1ctico al vac\u00edo.
